About us
International Opera Contest City of Bologna
is the official opera contest of Emilia-Romagna’s chief town, established by the non-profit association “Progetto Cultura Teatro Guardassoni” and now promoted in cooperation with Bologna’s Municipality.

In 2007, baritone and first artistic director Paolo Coni, musicologist Roberta Pedrotti and tenor Cristiano Cremonini started the contest in order to offer the finalists the opportunity to attend an entirely free internship to develop their artistic abilities.

Each year, we aim to offer young talents the valuable chance to grow as persons, artists and professionals in a friendly, yet qualitatevely rigorous environment.

Soprano Cinzia Forte has been in charge as artistic director and chief professor since 2009.

Amongst our guest professors, we would like to list the names of Pietro Spagnoli, Davide Livermore and Francesco Micheli. Along with them, other prominent figures of theatre and music have taken part in the committee, such as Gloria Banditelli, Gigliola Frazzoni, Angelo Gabrielli, Fulvio Macciardi, Michele Mirabella, Bruno Praticò, Giuseppe Sabbatini, Gianni Tangucci, Alberto Triola and Mauro Trombetta.

Young talents who have managed to emerge in the contest, now perform regularly at Milan’s La Scala, Venice’s Fenice Opera House, Turin and Parma’s Teatro Regio, Maggio Fiorentino, Bologna’s Teatro Comunale and Pesaro’s Rossini Opera Festival, as well as in Madrid, Berlin, Brussels, Montpellier, Glyndebourne, Vienna, Valencia, Liegi, etc.
